How to Read Your Stripe Fees Report and Balance Summary

Stripe's Fees report and Balance summary replace a merchant statement. What each shows, Stripe's standard rates, and how to export a month for analysis.

Stripe does not issue a classic monthly merchant statement. Two Dashboard reports cover the same ground: the Fees report, which lists every fee Stripe took, and the Balance summary report, which Stripe describes as working like a bank statement. This guide explains both.

The Fees report

Stripe's Fees report lists all fees taken from your Stripe balance, fee credits balance and financial accounts, including fees charged by Stripe, by card networks and by external partners. You can view it as a summary or itemized by transaction, and download it as CSV from the Dashboard (Reports > Fees).

Useful details:

  • Fee data appears in the report 96 hours after the fee affects your balance, so run a month's report at least four days after month end.
  • The itemized version includes a one-line fee description, the object that incurred the fee (charge, refund, invoice), the pricing tier applied, and tax on the fee.
  • The summary version groups fees by product suite (for example Payments) and feature.

The Balance summary report

The Balance summary report (Reports > Balance) has three sections:

Section What it shows
Balance summary Starting balance, activity, payouts, ending balance for the period
Balance change from activity Every transaction that affected your balance except payouts: charges, refunds, disputes, adjustments and fees, grouped by reporting category
Payouts Count and total of payouts to your bank

Each section exports to CSV; the first two also export to PDF. The itemized export has a gross, fee and net column for every transaction, and you can add columns such as card brand, card funding (credit, debit, prepaid) and card country. Those columns are what let you see your card mix.

Stripe's standard pricing

Standard U.S. pricing at time of writing:

Payment type Rate
Online card payments (domestic) 2.9% + 30 cents
In-person with Stripe Terminal (domestic) 2.7% + 5 cents
Manually entered cards add 0.5%
International cards add 1.5%
Currency conversion add 1%
Dispute received $15.00 each

Stripe states standard accounts have no setup fees, monthly fees or hidden fees. Fees for other products (Billing, Radar, Connect and so on) appear in the Fees report under their own suite.

Reading a month in four steps

  1. Run the Balance summary for the full calendar month and export the itemized Balance change from activity CSV with card brand and card funding columns added.
  2. Total the gross and fee columns for charges. Fee divided by gross is your effective rate. See Effective Rate: How to Calculate Your Card Processing Rate.
  3. Run the Fees report for the same month to confirm the total and to see non-transaction fees (disputes, product fees, tax on fees).
  4. Compare international and manually entered volume against domestic card-present volume, since each add-on changes the rate.

What to check each month

  • Dispute count and the $15 fee on each.
  • International and currency-conversion add-ons.
  • Refund entries, and whether the original fee was returned (the itemized export shows the fee on each refund line).
  • Product fees outside payments that you may not be using.

Exporting for analysis

Export the Balance summary PDF (summary plus itemized) or the Fees report CSV for one full month. Merchant Statement Analyzer reads either format and separates transaction fees from other charges.

FAQ

Does Stripe show interchange on its reports?

Standard pricing is a flat rate, so the reports show Stripe's fee per transaction, not interchange and assessments separately.

Why does the Fees report lag the Balance report?

Stripe makes fee data available 96 hours after it affects your balance. Daily balance data is complete by noon the next day.

Which report matches my bank deposits?

Neither one ties transactions to specific payouts. Stripe's docs point to the Payout reconciliation report for that.

Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?

Not on standard pricing. Check the Fees report for subscription fees on other Stripe products.
