How to Find and Read Your Shopify Payments Payouts and Fees

Shopify Payments has no classic merchant statement. Where to find your payouts, fees and activity report in the Shopify admin, and what each line means.

Where to find your statement Sources listed at the end

Shopify's help center does not describe a monthly merchant statement for Shopify Payments. Your card fees show up in three places instead: each payout, the Shopify Payments activity report, and, for some fees, your Shopify bill. This guide shows where each one is and how to read it.

Where Shopify shows your fees

Where What it shows
Finance, then Payouts Each payout to your bank, with its charges, refunds, adjustments, fees and reserves, and the transactions in it
Finance, then Documents, then Shopify Payments activity report A summary for a date range: gross activity, fees, payouts and balances
Settings, then Billing Your Shopify bills, including third-party transaction fees if you take payments through another provider

Find your payouts

From your Shopify admin, go to Finance, and in the Payouts section click View payouts. The page lists your previous and scheduled payouts and your payout balance: money captured but not yet added to a payout, not counting reserved funds.

Shopify notes it is releasing a new payouts view to some merchants, so your screens may differ slightly from its instructions.

Each payout has a status:

Status What it means
Scheduled The payout is being sent to your bank account
Deposited The payout was sent to your bank; Shopify says the bank can take 1 to 3 business days to make the funds available
Failed Your bank could not process the payout and the funds were not deposited
Withdrawn A withdrawal request was sent to your bank, in regions where Shopify Payments debits negative balances

Read a single payout

Click a payout to open it. The Overview shows the total amount, the status, the bank account it is going to, the transfer reference number when there is one, and a breakdown of charges, refunds, adjustments and reserves. The Transactions section lists each transaction in the payout.

Shopify says pending payout amounts and dates are estimates: the final amount can change before it is sent, because of refunds, chargebacks, reserves, adjustments or processing updates.

Export your transactions and fees

The Transactions table shows the total fees for each payout. To get every fee, export a CSV file:

  • One payout (new payouts view): go to Finance, then Payouts, open the payout, click the export icon, then Export payout transactions.
  • All transactions or a date range: go to Settings, then Payments, click View payouts, View Transactions and Export, choose the range and the type of file, then click Export balance transactions.

Shopify emails the file to you and to the store owner. Both exports have the same columns:

Column What it holds
Transaction Date When the transaction happened, with the time zone
Type The kind of transaction, such as an adjustment or a refund
Order The order number
Card Brand, Card Source The card brand, and how the card was taken (for example, swiped)
Payout Status, Payout Date, Available On Where the money is in the payout process
Amount The amount of the transaction
Fee The fee applied to it
Net Amount minus fee

The Shopify Payments activity report

For a whole month, the activity report is the closest thing to a statement. Go to Finance, click Documents, then Shopify Payments activity report, and pick Last month (or another range). You can export it to PDF.

The summary shows your starting balance, gross activity, fees, payouts, the net change and your ending balance. Below it, activity is grouped by type, each group with a gross amount, fees and a net amount. The groups that matter most for fees:

  • Charges: customer payments through Shopify Payments, with their processing fees.
  • Refunds: refunds and related fee adjustments.
  • Disputes: chargebacks, dispute holds, dispute fees and related adjustments.
  • Adjustments and Fees: balance adjustments and other fees not grouped elsewhere.
  • Reserves and holds: money Shopify is holding, which is not a fee.

Shopify lists the report's limits: it leaves out your Shopify bill and third-party payment providers, its data runs three days behind, it is not a statement of revenue for accounting, and custom date ranges start on January 1, 2025.

Processing fees and transaction fees

These are two different charges, and they show up in different places:

  1. Shopify Payments processing fees (your credit card rate) come out of each payout, in the Fee column. Shopify says your rate depends on your Shopify plan. To see it, go to Settings, then Payments, click Manage in the Shopify Payments section, and look under Standard rates.
  2. Third-party transaction fees apply when you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments. Shopify charges them on top of that provider's own processing fees, and they appear on your Shopify bill, under Settings, then Billing, in the Transaction fees section of a past bill. Shopify says they are not returned when you refund an order. With Shopify Payments you pay the credit card rate but no transaction fee.

Refunds and chargebacks

  • Refunds: the refunded amount comes out of your next available payout, and Shopify does not return the original card processing fee, whether or not the order was fulfilled.
  • Chargebacks: when a customer's bank opens a chargeback, the disputed amount and a chargeback fee are taken from your balance. If you win, Shopify says both are returned.

Working out your effective rate

Open the activity report for last month. Divide its Fees total by the gross amount of the Charges group, then multiply by 100. If you also pay third-party transaction fees, add that month's total from your Shopify bill to the fees first. The effective rate calculator does the math, and Effective Rate: How to Calculate Your Card Processing Rate explains what the number tells you.

What to check each month

  • Disputes and adjustments in the activity report, which carry their own fees.
  • Refunds, since the original processing fee is not returned.
  • Third-party transaction fees on your Shopify bill, if you take payments through another provider.
  • Reserves and holds, which lower a payout without being a cost.

FAQ

Does Shopify Payments send a monthly statement?

Shopify's help center does not describe one. The Shopify Payments activity report, run for last month and exported to PDF, is the closest equivalent; the payout CSV export has every transaction's fee.

Where do I see my Shopify Payments rate?

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Payments, click Manage in the Shopify Payments section, and look under Standard rates. Shopify says the rate depends on your plan.

Why is my payout lower than my sales?

Processing fees come out before the payout, and refunds, chargebacks, adjustments and reserves can lower it too. Open the payout to see its breakdown.

Are Shopify transaction fees the same as processing fees?

No. Processing fees are what you pay to take a card. Third-party transaction fees are charged by Shopify, on your bill, only when a payment goes through a provider other than Shopify Payments.
